OUTDOOR LIFE ALL YEAR ROUND

Visiting Gloucester, America's oldest seaport, can be a source of endless interest in any season. As you enter Gloucester along Stacy Boulevard the first thing you will see is our beautiful outer harbor. From that harbor thousands of ships have gone to sea and the memorial on the Boulevard pays homage to the many who did not return.
In addition to our maritime heritage, Gloucester has a long cultural history. Writers such as T.S. Eliot, Rudyard Kipling, Herman Melville, and John Updike have visited Gloucester and used it as inspiration. Artists Fitz Henry Lane, Maxfield Parrish, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, & Mark Rothko have painted here. In 1979 New York playwrite Israel Horowitz opened his summer theater here. Gloucester was the home of poets Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini.
Whether you want to fill your time with exploration, sports, cultural events, or just enjoying life, Gloucester offers endless recreational activities. You can swim, sail, kayak, paint, read, daydream, or spend the day skipping stones in a tidal creek.
Gloucester has a diverse ethnic history the influences of which can still be enjoyed in our architecture, restaurants, places of worship, and festivals. Portuguese and Italian fishing families brought their traditions when they came to Gloucester and many can still be experienced. Our Lady of Good Voyage Church (at left) is a tribute to the men who went to sea. The Madonna between the blue towers cradles a fishing vessel in her arms.
Outdoor life is very important here, especially in summer. Recently Downtown Block Parties have become popular. One Saturday night a month throughout the summer the downtown streets are closed. Restaurants move their tables out into the street, performers of every kind entertain the crowds, and slide shows of local photographers are projected onto the sides of a building. There is dancing in the streets well into the night.
At Harbor Loop throughout the summer there are outdoor concerts every Thursday night. The concerts follow the weekly Farmer's Market where local farmers come to sell produce, preserves, baked goods and more. Restaurants offer cooking demonstrations and there is an annual Cooking Smack-down.
Located on the rugged cost of the Atlantic Ocean the weather isn't always ideal --- but it is always interesting. During an April storm (at left) waves crash up over Stacy Boulevard. People bundle up and come out to see the show.
Winter is quiet but it is also very beautiful. Bird watchers and painters come in all kinds of weather to take advantage of our quiet season. No matter when you visit Gloucester there is always something wonderful to discover.
